September 2012 Fishing Reports

The silvers have been spotty but using center pin style float fishing proved to be the trick for some bright Silvers in the lower Kenai. Middle Kenai has been a mixed bag with Silvers, Kings, Pinks and Sockeye in the same system and the Rainbows and Dollies are loving life with lots of feed.

Gravel bars are becoming exposed and wadeable which is producing some great rainbow days on the Middle River and outstanding Dolly fishing at the canyon. Canyon fishing is reached by power boat from the Upper Skilak boat launch. Expect a 30 minute boat ride and a short walk to the "miracle mile" as the local guides call it. Big fat Dollies in spawn colors show up for a 6 mm washed out bead and game on.

Anchor River, a small "walk in" coastal stream has been great for steelhead on the fly. Our steelhead are between 8-10 lbs. with an occasional fish 12+. The river is a peat base shallow river that can really get the steelhead on some awesome ariels and long to the backing runs. TRL guides are fishing both the Spey and conventional fly fishing and crush the local waters. With multiple drift boats and suburbans to match we fish all of the local waters.

Kenai is running high due to an unusual amount of rain in the mountains. Guides are still finding fish which are located near the river banks. Often the trout will stay on feed on the gravel bars close to shore in high water conditions. The waters near shore is both clearer and softer which makes finding forage easier.

Crescent lake was excellent for Silvers on the beads and of coarse the dollies were thick.

The fall colors are in full kaleidoscope and we just had our first dust of snow which means time to get in the last casts. Kasilof is producing some good catches of steelhead and the confluence of the Moose River has been really good in the early morning light for silver salmon. With rod in hand breathing in the fresh cold air and enjoying the solitude of fall fishing we wanted to take some time out to really thank our guests this year. We had a great year with lots of good fish, hearty laughs and memories that will last long after the barbecue is over.

Looking forward to fishing with you next year!
