Steelhead Fishing

Steelhead fishing
Often referred to as “a fish of a thousand casts” Steelhead are revered amongst the most avid fisherman. Our steelhead start moving into our coastal rivers in early September with fishing improving as the month progresses. We primarily fly fish for steelhead, though conventional gear such as spinning rods can also be used. Tower Rock guides will also provide the option to fish for silver salmon (aka coho salmon) on the same day trip, as they are often found in the same stretches of water during the late summer and fall. Dolly Varden (aka Arctic Char) and rainbow trout are also common “by-catch” providing all day action. Because all of our steelhead in Alaska are naturally produced (“wild fish”), they are only available for catch and release. During the second half of September, between two anglers, it is not uncommon to bring four or five steelhead to the net per day. These impressive catch rates provide a special opportunity for both seasoned “steelheaders” and novices looking to catch the steelhead bug.
